If the Phillies win their second World Series title in a row, they won't just win more World Series rings. They'll also win the pro bono service of New York City Corporation Counsel Michael A. Cardozo and his top deputies from the New York City Law Department.
Philadelphia City Solicitor Shelley R. Smith and Cardozo have struck a friendly wager that will require the law department team for the losing city in the World Series to do pro bono legal service on the victor's turf while wearing the winning team's jerseys.
The bet over the outcome of the matchup of the Phillies and the Yankees is just in time for National Pro Bono Week. The volunteer efforts will include working with students in mock trials or moot courts and speaking to schoolchildren about legal careers.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also have waged volunteer service as the cost of a loss by their hometown team in the World Series.
